Research supported by SAR has an unparalleled impact on our understanding of the human experience. Through his research at the School as a Resident Scholar and Advanced Seminar organizer, ethnomusicologist Steven Feld launched an entire area of inquiry known as “anthropology of the senses.” This ground-breaking work resulted in Sound and Sentiment, a winner of SAR’s prestigious J. I. Staley Book Prize. The year after his Resident Scholar fellowship at SAR, Feld was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship, joining 14 other anthropologists associated with the School who have received this highly coveted $500,000 “genius award.”
